Tom, I have my navigation program (Nobletec) installed on a lap top
using Windows 2000. The improved reliability of the Windows 2000
operating system compared to Windows 98 which I previously used is
dramatic. I have never experienced a crash when using the Navigation
program underway. One thing which I do when using the system to navigate
is close all of the other programs so the computer is only running
Nobletec. I also turn off the screen saver option so the chart stays on
continuously.
We have a new desk top at home with Windows XP. This operating system is
very reliable as well, however there are some programs which will not
operate properly with XP and you have to down load a patch. Before
switching to a different operating system I would check to be sure your
navigation software is compatible with the OS. Good luck, Mike.

Subject: TWL: Computer OS's & Stability
I'm a Mac user who twisted off and purchased a PC for use on the boat
and
at home. For the last 3 months I have been trying to learn to use
Windows
ME and find it rather frustrating what with all the hangups, crashes
etc..
Since I want to use my MaxSea navigation program on the PC I am
concerned
about the stability of the OS during actual use while underway. Sooooo,
I
am soliciting advice on how to improve my system. Checking w/ various
sales (?) types at several computer stores I get mixed messages like
upgrade to XP, Windows sucks, Internet Explorer is the problem (I use
Earthlink 5.0 as my browser) and so on. Right now I am leaning toward
partitioning my hard drive into 2 different drives with the navigation
program plus OS on one dedicated partition and all the rest of the
applications including another OS on the other partition. Have heard
good
things about 98Lite which allows you to remove all the stuff from the OS
(there seems to be lots) that one doesn't really need and seems to
greatly
improve the stability of the system. If one could use Linux and some
window OS suppose that would be the best approach but I don't really
have
the skills to install such a system.
Time to liven up the list a bit and talk about things other than new
boats,
props, heads, bilge pumps, alternators, generators, fuel polishing, oil
changing and max rpm's of Ford Lehmans -- unless you want to talk about
my
John Deere 6068D :).
