Back in the mid 60's, a Willard 36 made the West Coast/Hawaii run. The
Willard 36 does not have sufficient fuel tankage to make that voyage with
stock tanks. Therefore, the boat carried additional fuel in the stern
cockpit.....as I recall in 55 gal. drums. Willard Marine would NEVER
recommend that anyone do that. It is unsafe and unwise. It makes me
shudder to think of a boat leaving port on this kind of passage with the
stern about 4 inches low in the water!
The Willard 36 has been out of production for over 30 years. When built
as a derivative of a Bill Garden design, it was never envisioned that
this boat might be seriously considered for major open ocean passages
even though the design is fully capable of such passages. It is
unfortunate that the original fuel tanks were not about 100 gallons
larger, because that would have made such voyages possible. It would
have made a great alternative today for those looking for a stout open
ocean passagemaker at between $50K to $80K on the used market today.
We are not a brokerage. We do not resell used boats. One of many places
to check for availability of used boats - of any brand - is:
