Actually Garrett what is technical fact and what really is technical fact
are often different. If the manufacturer of a given pump tell me it takes 8
oz of oil to lubricate and two good mechanics tell me to use 16 oz. I will
in general go with the mechanics. The numbers in the specs of manufacturers
are oft derived by odd routes - many of which have nothing to do with
technical truth. In general I prefer the input of an experienced practioner
to that of a scribe preparing specs on a basis of which he has no
understanding.

Following my advice will burn you periodically...the blacksmith does not
always understand the theory of alloys. But I think you will be right more
often than wrong.

Anchoring is an art. Catenaries are pure science. And chafe if pure
application. When one suggests that chain catenaries provide protection
under storm conditions one is merely displaying a dangereous lack of
understanding of the scientific portion of the art and should run out, buy
Earl's book and study it. Chain is dangereous stuff if it is really ugly.

The problem with nylon is alway chafe. Even the loss of sea anchors is
driven mostly by chafe. If you want to run storm anchors or sea anchors you
better set up to deal with chafe and keep dealing with it. When push comes
to shove it may well be the most important branch of this arcane field.
