Hi Dan
If the 110v circuit breaker on your boat's main panel is 30 amps, any
downside fault on the boat that might cause a draw of more than 30 amps
would trip the breaker. Therefore, you can start by assuming the problem
lies between that breaker and the dock box. And, since the heat was
generated at the dock box end, that's undoubtedly where the problem is.
Given the heavy rain you described, is there any way water could have
entered and shorted the plug that goes into the dock box? In any event,
it's the property, and therefore, the responsibility of the marina, so
call them in to have a look at it immediately. Not something to fool
around with.
BTW, it would be an excellent safety measure to install a circuit
breaker in the dock box itself, particularly if you are living aboard.
If something like this were to happen again, it would trip before any
real damage is done. I put a little 50 amp panel in my boathouse for
just that reason.
Cheers, Garrett
