RE: TWL: major shore power issue

Another thing that can cause premature failure of shore power cords and
their connections on our boats is sloppy handling. My surveyor has
explained to me that you must make sure the main power is off when you
connect or disconnect the shore power cords. If you don't, they will arc
(spark) a little as you connect or disconnect them. This arcing will leave
a little carbon deposit behind. This will eventually lead to a melt down
because of the heat generated at that point by the resistance.

Our marina manager has told me about boats that have caught fire or caused
extensive damage by melting because of this same problem.

Be sure there is no power before you connect or disconnect shore power
cords. You will save money on replacement cords, too!

Cheers,
