Yep. March 1997. Tacoma, WA. We were almost killed and our
trawler completely demolished by a pickup camper. Really! Now
how the heck could that have happened? "Aw....That's impossible!"
Now the rest of the story. Early one morning we decided to go to
Gig Harbor for fuel. A weather check revealed that high winds were
expected to hit Puget Sound about 6pm that day. Plenty of time to
run for fuel and return we thought. After fuelling and just as we
were leaving the fuel dock, the winds hit. But it's only 11 AM!
Well the trees were bent over at their maximum angle as we
entered the Tacoma Narrows. Full blown storm......instantly. We
were running up the narrows and the water was being whipped into
streaked foam with the wave height increasing rapidly. Dawna
wanted to go below to escape the tempest but I was concerned
that she'd be blown overboard and refused to let her go. So we ran
on with our heads just peeking over the wind screen.
As we approached the Narrows Bridge, a large suspension bridge,
the full fury of the storm hit. It blew even harder!
Then we caught a glimpse of something BIG falling through the air
at us. With no time to even see clearly what it was, the object
struck the water alongside us and disintegrated! Pieces of
plywood, metal, and all kinds of things were blown end over end
across the water without having time to sink. It was a camper that
had been blown off a pickup which was travelling across the bridge
several hundred feet above and ahead of us.
If it had struck us we wouldn't have had to worry about explaining
the damage to our insurance agent.
