What is the consensus of the list? Thru-hull, or inside? (Hole or no hole.)
Digital depth sounder, or fish finder with bottom contour? Interference with
present depth sounder? Our plan is to install on the other side of the hull
as the present one, thus putting the keel between the transducers. Our hull
is solid fiberglass- no coring.

We spent half the summer trying to get a to get a transducer to shoot thru
the hull of Sadie B, an Albin 27, with no success in several places on the
hull below decks. It was for a Garmin (168?) depth and fish finder/gps and
absolutely would not shoot through the fiberglass and whatever else is in
the hull. We finally temporarily mounted the transducer on a strut of the
swim platform and it worked flawlessly thereafter. Will be permanently
installing it on the transom when we re launch this spring.

I suspect the only way to know if it will work thru hull is to try it in
the water. Ours would often work for a short period of time and then lose
the signal shooting thru the hull. With the advice of several listees we
tried epoxying the transducer to the hull, mounting it in a piece of pvc
suspended in mineral oil, and several other options, none of which worked.
I really wanted to have the transducer mounted farther ahead in the boat,
but had no luck with the installation. By the way, its fun to watch the
fish swim by, even if you are not a fisherman!
