Subject: TWL: Re: Bringing a single engine boat onto a side tie - practice routine for novices

We had a problem tie for a while and I had a short (3') post with an arm on
it that we would drape of the permanently tied spring lines to. The first
mate would pick up the line with the pike pole and quickly tie it to one of
the ship's cleats. This gave me one line to back against if necessary.
This maneuver is fraught with danger but if the first mate is confident and
knows exactly what to do with the line it can be of great help. If the
shipboard end has a fixed loop it can just be dropped over the cleat.
A similar move involves having one of those funny shaped hooks that can be
thrown across the dock. These are sold at boat shows and almost always
catch. Once again, the trick is tying it off.
