Subject: TWL: RE:Diesel Fuel Pump Leak (was Perkins Problem)

I cannot answer the question about fuel pumps on PERKINS engines, but I can
tell you what I did two days ago to solve a long-standing problem on my
starboard Ford-Lehman 120.
Seems that I had sort of gotten used to the fact that the Simms fuel pump on
that engine tended to leave a small amount of diesel fuel on its exterior
after a day's running. I bought a tubing wrench a couple years ago and gave
a good pull on the hex nuts securing the injection lines to the delivery
ports of the pump. Problem didn't go away, but it was not really bad enough
to concern me, except for the odor. Got to thinking the problem was a bit
lower down under the fuel delivery valve retaining cap on the pump body.
Even one drop of diesel can let you know it's in the same room with you.
The pump had been overhauled maybe a thousand hours ago, and I didn't feel
like taking it off and sending it 160 miles to Test and Calibration in
Mobile, AL, the closest place I could find which works on pumps. I had
previously (a year or so ago) checked with Brian at American Diesel about
the possibility of getting my hands on the special tool needed to torque
down the fuel delivery valve caps under the aforementioned hex nuts, but he
had no knowledge about the pump or where to get the tool. The folks at Test
and Cal thought a little judicious torque (40 foot-pounds to be exact)
applied by yours truly would be worth a try and agreed to order the tool
(really just a socket with a specialized multi-toothed end). The socket ran
me over $70, but it saved me removal of the pump, etc, etc. Problem was
solved in about an hour. I should have pursued the Simms socket harder long
ago. I was awarded the Fanning Bayou do-it-yourself diesel mechanic
self-sufficiency award for the day by my lurker neighbor rebuilding his
trawler (and doing a danged fine job without me) across the way.
