TWL: Perkins Problem

Can anyone on the list help me with an aggravating problem on an old
Perkins 6.354M marine diesel engine?

There is a small diesel fuel leak somewhere on the injector pump. All
efforts to date have failed to localize the source of the leak. All of
the various lines are tight, as tested by attempting to further tighten
them without breaking anything. There is no sign of a fuel leak, as
evidenced by fuel puddling or bubbling, but after the engine has run for
a while, diesel fuel will appear around the base of the injector pump
and coat the side of the engine. The amount of fuel that appears is
very small. Feeling the various fittings has not indicated the presence
of the leak.

The mechanic that assists me when I get in over my head has looked at
the pump. He says that the only thing he can suggest is to remove the
pump and have it rebuilt. That will be the next step, unless someone on
the list has previously solved this type of problem and can pass on the
solution.

Many thanks,
