Hi Richard,
Are you looking when the engine is fully up to operating temperature? I had
a similar problem about a year ago; oil in the bilge but no apparent drip. I
finally located the leak by getting the engine fully warmed up and then
crawling around behind it and watching the suspected area for about ten
minutes.
In my case it was the fitting that attaches the dip stick tube to the oil
pan. It had become slightly loose and, when the engine was hot, would drip
about one drop every minute or so. Cold oil either didn't drip at all or did
so slowly enough that I was never looking in the right place at the right
time.
BTW: Getting that intimate with a 180+F engine probably won't be the most
fun thing you've ever done. You'll probably also get a new appreciation for
the term "Black gang". In my case it was worth it after literally months of
bilge cleaning and head scratching.
Justifiably yours,
Alex
