I had a very serious overheating problem on my 6-354 a year ago. I was just
coming into Baltimore, about a quarter mile from the marina when I noticed
that the temperature gauge was climbing visibly. I could see it moving! I
quickly checked the raw water flow and it was fine. Checked the belts on the
engine and everything was turning just fine. Got into a slip in the marina
before the temperature got over 200 and shut down.
A little investigation revealed that the coolant level was fine but there
was a slight drip from the fresh water circulating pump.
I got on the phone and called my Perkins supplier in Pompano Beach, FL and
ordered a water pump to be shipped overnight to Baltimore.
I then removed the old pump. Surprise! The impeller had come off the
shaft!! I'd never heard of that happening before to a centrifugal water
pump. Guess anything can happen.
The new pump arrived, I installed it and have been running cool ever since.
I'm considering getting another new pump as a spare. If that impeller comes
off out in the ocean I'd be dead in the water.
Has anyone else ever had this problem?
