Interesting thread, topless or not..
On my boat, '79 OA 40', I could not possibly go topless...it is my garage,
junk drawer, life jacket locker, etc. etc.

The discussion leads however to the huge bimini tents that are common on US
boats, built around the upper bridge. To my eye, the lines of so many
otherwise good looking boats are lost when the spec reads 'must have 6' 6"
headroom under the bimini'. I have seen a good looking hardtop enclosed over
the forward portion of the upper helm such the a less-than-full-height but
very comfortable full time helm station is created, easy to heat, good view
etc. but only sitting height. The back portion is uncovered so the 'ray
catchers' get their space too.
The result seems to be a very good compromise for those who don't need an
ego bridge as well as a helm station.
