Subject: TWL: engine overheating problem

I have been struggling with a serious overheating problem on a perkins 6-354
for about a year now.
It began when a belt failed and took out a hose the previous owner had
installed from the engine to the water heater for hot water enroute w/o the
generator running.
Needless to say this caused most of the glycol/water mix to quickly leave the
cooling system. And a rapid overheat condition quickly followed.
Since then, the impeller has been changed and several blades retrived from
down stream, both thermostats have been changed, the heat exchanger has been
thoroughly cleaned out.
The engine will still move toward the temp red line when under load and even
at idle will move up to about 170 degrees. I have had a mechanic working the
problem,.......but at this point I dont have to much confidence in him.
We thought of a blown head gasket, but fortunately the oil is clean and no
sign of water infiltration is present.
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
