Hi Dan,
It's a good idea to change elements once per season whether they need it or
not.
Beyond that, you either need a vacuum gauge to determine when you need to
change or you simply wait till the element clogs and switch to the other
one.
A vacuum gauge is better, both for your peace of mind and as a guard against
Murphy's law. If you don't already have one; Get one. They aren't very
expensive and should be available at the same place you bought the filter. I
advocate spending a bit more to get a remote unit that can be mounted at the
control station.
Once you've got the gauge there are two ways to use it:
1. Note the restriction when the element is new and change when it has
increased by 6-8 inches Hg.
2. Run the system till you notice a power loss, note the gauge reading,
subtract 1 inch Hg; This is your change point in the future.
All readings should be taken at WOT under load (not in neutral) for best
validity.
WRT which elements to use: Your Racors are designed to be used with 2 micron
elements under normal operating conditions. The 10 and 30 micron elements
are intended for special circumstances such as extreme cold or if the filter
is being used as a "pre-filter" in a multi-element system. If, as you
suspect, your fuel is especially dirty you should still use the 2 micron
element and just resign yourself to more frequent element changes for a
while.
Your engine will thank you for it!
Prophylacticly yours,
Alex
