Hi Joe et al,
James Weideman and I proposed a similar power source for an ocean going
craft almost three years ago right here on TWL! Unfortunately, the expected
grant money was not forthcoming and the project is now in a state of
permanent delay. An overview of the proposed system can be found at the
following URL:

For those interested in the context of this idea it may be worthwhile to
read more of the discussion. To do so go to the following URL:
http://www.samurai.com/lists/trawler-world-old/1998/10/subject.html#start
and scroll down to the "Cow" thread.
As the subject line implies, our original proposal used a cow based
technology. I now believe, based on the work of Ram Bux Singh in India that
this technology has limitations. What Mr. Singh demonstrated was that energy
output* is directly related to the variety of feedstocks that can be
processed. For example, Singh demonstrated that pig technology is
significantly more efficient in energy production than cow tech. It is my
belief that it should be possible to carry this logic to its conclusion by
proposing the use of a preprocessor that has proven to have the ability to
handle the widest variety of feedstocks. That's right, human technology
could very well be the answer for self sufficiency or just for avoiding the
skyrocketing cost of fossil fuel!
*Actually measured in terms of volume (or weight) of CH4.
Gassily yours,
Alex
