My Sitex T-150 radar Unit is having trouble. >>
Hi Dan,
Sorry to hear of your RADAR's trouble. Little units like the Sitex and JRCs
are probably best taken off the boat and sent back to the manufacturer's
service center for repair. Before you do that:
- check all the connections are tight and free of corrosion,
- it is getting a full shot of 12v power,
- grounding wires are all ok,
- the radome to ppi cable is not kinked, cut or mutilated.
If all these are OK, does the unit show anything in Demo mode?
Try a 'factory reset' (the Sitex people should have some way of getting all
user settings back to factory settings by pressing a wierd combination of
buttons) Try removing all power, waiting a few minutes and restoring power.
Try hitting it "up side it's head" - Hey, it worked on the Millennium Falcon.
{8^)
Put it in a box and send it back to Sitex.
These little RADARS are almost entirely pressed plastic circuits (not even
circuit boards!) and aluminum. I had my JRC apart and I was amazed at what it
was made of...and not made of. I didn't see anything even remotely field
replacable. My old Furuno could be disassembled with an air hammer and fixed
with a 'Bronson Rock'. I needed jeweler's tools for the JRC. Still, it works
and time marches on.
The up side of this is that it wouldn't cost SITEX more than a buck or two to
replace the entire unit. Most of the consumer level marine electronic
manufacturers seem to have a flat fee that they charge to fix anything. They
usually don't fix it. They chuck it and send you a replacement because it is
cheaper for them. Give it a try. What have you got to lose?
Let us know how it works out.
Best Regards,
Al Johnson
