Does the noise come equally from each side, or is one
prop/shaft/strut noisier than the other? I recently
spent two weeks on a Gulfstar 49 MY which had just had
new Yanmar 375 hp engines installed. The port shaft
has a loud rumble, much worse than the starboard. I
found that the port shaft is slightly bent, I suspect
by the Travellift strap being in the wrong place
during haulout or relaunch. The prop looks perfect.
To diagnose this problem, disconnect the shaft
coupling from the transmission coupling and pull the
shaft aft to disengage the coupling pilot and bore.
Set up a dial indicator on the shaft, and measure
runout while rotating ther shaft by hand.
Another possible cause of the noise is worn cutlass
bearings on one or both sides.
