John
Having had a look at the keel, they probably only had to remove 8-10 inches,
but it must have been a tricky business. Nothing like the blast that removed
another pinnacle rock in a commercial shipping channel just north of here
about 25 years ago. It had sunk so many ships that the government blew it up
with what I recall was the largest non-nuclear explosion until that time.
I use John Passage quite often since it's one of the ways into my marina.
(If you read my post in January about getting caught in a narrow channel in
heavy fog, it was, in fact, John Passage. Which is why I was extra nervous.)
The channel is well marked with day markers, and John Rock itself lies near
and to the outside of the port hand marker, so I have no idea how the
captain got his boat into such trouble.
George Geist asked for a photo of this incident, so I dug the newspaper out
of the trash and scanned it for him. It's quite dramatic, and I'll send you
a copy separately.
Cheers, Garrett
