This thread of single purpose vs. multi purpose knives is interesting but we
are comparing kumquats and grapefruits. Fortunately we can scientifically
test the alternatives. I own both the Leatherman Supertool and the Gerber
MultiTool. By actual test it takes me 8 seconds to open the knife blade on
the Gerber and 12 seconds to open the knife blade on the Leatherman. That's
assuming that I select the right blade in the first place. In the dark I
might as well get the can opener or the nail file. Clearly these are not the
right knives for an emergency situation although they work fine for turning
screws, punching holes or even trimming toenails in a more leisurely
environment. I can have my sheath knife ready to cut line in about one second
but it would be messy to use as a can opener.
