I bought a Dell 7500 last spring (which has been replaced by their Dell 8000
a few months ago). I am extremely happy with it. The screen is 15" so is
good for navigation programs. It has great resolution. (up to 1600 x 1400).
Can be seen even in the light of our pilothouse (must admit I made a 3"
three sided black cardboard shade for when direct sunlight is shining in) .
Has a Pentium III 650 mhz processor which is as fast a lightning. I bought
an abundance of RAM since I play around with my digital camera. I think it
was 194 megabytes. I spent more and got the 12 gigabyte hard drive. I
bought the Port Replicator because I use this computer at home. I bought
an extra power cord which I keep down at the boat. When I want to go I
throw a switch and take the computer with me. When I come home I don't have
to plug in all my "stuff", just slide the computer into the port replicator
(or docking station as some call it). I have four CDs of charts from Puget
Sound to Southeast Alaska on my hard drive and still have plenty of room for
all of my pictures.
The folks in the Technical Department are very accommodating and helpful.
By the way, I still have my Dell Inspiron 3000 laptop which I took with us
to Alaska last year as a backup. Ended up using it to print pictures of
people and boats along the way to give people. It is quite adequate, not as
fast as my Inspiron 7500 but it works just fine.
I really like the 7500 because it is so fast and the display is very
readable I have a 600 watt inverter which I have dedicated to my computer.
We also have a Trace inverter but I only use the 600 watt inverter for
charging the computer batteries. In fact I just leave it plugged in and run
off the inverter. Running on battery it will last 3.3 hours with its power
miser running, so if you do not have a power source you have a window to run
before plugging in to recharge.
Don't own any Dell Stock (darn) and have not $ interest. This is my third
Dell and I loved them all.
