    I wasn't going to contribute to this thread, but since no one mentioned the
    obvious, there are several very sailing knives on the markets perfect for
    use on a trawler. The combo I like has a 5" straight edged blade with a
    comfortable plastic grip in a leather scabbard which also holds a marlin
    spike and a small pair of electrician's pliers, all in stainless steel. I've
    had mine for 15 years or so, and it is instantly available either-handed.
    You'll be surprised how often you use both the spike and the pliers.
