IMHO, any knife, carried on your person aboard a boat, should be deployable
with one hand only, either from a scabbard, or by using a knife that opens
one-handedly. Spyderco, my personal favorite, or Benchmark knives come to
mind. Should the need arise to use a knife, your off hand is liable to be
doing something else like holding onto a rail or maybe even the line you're
going to cut. As with any other piece of emergency equipment, if you wait
till an actual emergency to find out how it works, you're going to be in
much deeper trouble than you need to be. It might be a good idea to
practice deploying the knife until it becomes second nature.
