A few details which you might savor. The sailboat which sank was about 30
    feet long.
The towboat was one of those small commercial boats with twin gas used by
all the Tow Boat clubs for assistance towing.
Capt. Krunch had a knife. it was with the rest of the safety gear. He was
well equipped. It was all just out of reach. When the boat sank, it went
down so fast, he never made it inside the cabin. Here he was without a care
in the world, sitting on the upturned bow of his pretty towboat, and
nothing else in sight. Of course shortly thereafter even that disappeared.
If he had just not fastened the towline down but let it hang loose. If he
had placed his safety jacket with all it's toys on the back of the helm
seat, it would have floated free.
Inventory does not equal safety. You have to be able to lay your hands on
the tools when all hell breaks loose.
Whatever is going to kill you is going to SNEAK up on you.
Before all this he had a license, but that did not make him a professional.
The professional is scared. Capt. Krunch is a professional now.
He told me he had been stupid. He said it was his fault. But he was wrong.
I knew what he was doing and that he did not have enough savvy, and I
failed him by not warning him and showing the materials he should have read
before doing this kind of work. So who made the bigger mistake. Him who had
had a license for 5 years, or I who knew what he did not and had 30 years
experience. Don't stand around in blissful silence while your friends are
getting themselves hurt of killed, out of simple ignorance.
By the way, Capt. Krunch is about 10 years older than me and I still should
    have warned him.

    Capt. Mike Maurice
