Most combiners are only rated for a couple of hundred amps.
A starter can draw 600 amps peak when the engine is stiff cold or oil is
    thick.

The solonoid solution is better since the start current is only passed
through the switch contacts a very few times.

I investigated the failure mode of several combiner products and found
that exces current and mis application was the number one cause of failure.
Combiners arer not intended for starter current applications. They are
intended for joining batteries in house bank applications.

    regards
    Arild
