According to ABOK, Ashley Book of Knots, the word Rope is seldom heard on
shipboard, where it generally refers to unbroken coils. " But a man is no
sailor (Trawlerer) until he has "learned the ropes". He goes on quoting an
old saying ,"There are seven ropes aboard a ship," but there are actually
over sixty that have born the name. An older book "Lucy's Seamanship lists
    over forty.
Maybe it would be interesting to hear all the names. I only know a few:
    manrope, bellrope, rope bail...
