One neat trick if you have an inflatable dinghy is to fully or semi deflate
one chamber. This permits someone to enter from the water by almost
floating over the edge. Once in, you can pull them alongside or up to the
swim platform. Now they have something on which they can stand and thus are
able to use their own leg muscles to push up and get back on to the mother
ship. With leg muscles being as strong as they this can be a great help.
The second advantage of using a semi-inflated dinghy as a rescue aid is
that the MOB can get most of his/her body out of the water once in the
dinghy. This significantly reduces the rate of hypothermia and gives extra
time for the person aboard to prepare whatever rig is necessary to make the
transfer from the dinghy back on to the mother ship.
BTW, here is yet another reason for crew to carry a very sharp
pocket/survival knife. It can be used to slash one chamber of an inflatable
so they can get back aboard.
