While I'm sitting in Vermont's beautiful snow scene, I'm working on
the float plan for a trip across the Okeechobee Waterway in mid-February.
Rumors have reached this far north that the locks are on limited schedules,
that the rim route is closed, and that salt water intrusion continues to
threaten a complete shut down of the Franklin Lock.
So what's really going on? Who has been across in the last month,
what conditions did they find, and what is that 1-800 number for the Corps of
    Engineers to get up-to-the-minute information?
My plan right now is to depart Delray Beach, bound for Charlotte
Harbor via Stuart, Okeechobee, and Fort Myers, on Feb 22.
