Capt. Kelli,
My answer to this involves your cellphone. The phone manufacturers are
now marketing "Data Packages" to go along with their phones (also data
capable) to access the Internet through your cellphone. And phone service
providers are charging small fees(approx $10 per month) to access your plan
minutes to use for Internet access. The claimed connection rates are 14.4.
While that isn't all that great, it is plenty for data only type
applications. This is all info that I recently gleaned from a Sprint store
and I would assume the other folks are offering something similar.
From a cost perspective......One time fees: Data Capable
phone.....$200; data package....$50-80. Monthly fees: $75 for 1000 anytime
minutes and 2000 off peak (weekends and 2000-0700LCL); $10 for access to plan
minutes.
These are all gross approximations and are based on Sprint Packages and
hardware, which could be subject to change or negotiation. Other providers
would obviously differ. I have no idea as to the reliability of the data
connection since I have never used it and don't consider their PCS all that
great.....they just always come in with the cheapest prices. I am no
computer guru, but I would think the signal would have to be converted to
analog and maybe you would gain some reliability here....I don't know and am
way out of my league.
A little semi-related editorial. While we live in an increasing
marvelous technological world, the "quantity" of our technology seems to be
outpacing the "quality". A case in point: Cellphones. My analog phone of 5
years ago provided better service than my digital of today. Yes, the battery
lasts longer and it is more secure but in many cases it is barely useable
through clipped conversation whereas the analog we just got a little static.
Computers......my 750mhz machine is not 10x faster than my 75mhz.....and
Internet providers and connections are way behind the curve. New Star Wars
versus the original movie. Yeah it was produced with all kinds of gee whiz
computers but the result (which is what we are interested in) was way less
impressive than the original 25 years ago......y'all get my
drift.......WHEW.... I feel better now.
Georgs, sorry for the dialog. I don't work for the Postal service so
y'all can relax.
Trawler on,
John
