The motion sensors that make the lights come on when someone walks by are
actually infrared heat detectors that sense a change in temperature and
that is what makes the lights come on. I have one on the dock that lights
up when anyone comes down the finger pier or when I get off the boat. It
provides illumination when necessary and doesn't draw bugs when no one is
    around.

If you ever get involved in using these kind of sensors for an alarm they
make two types. One is the infrared temperature ones that work well except
they go through glass and can see a boat next to you leave the slip. There
is another type that uses ultrasonic technology to detect motion. They make
a premium "dual" model that incorporates both technologies and will only
alarm if both sensors detect a problem and therefore are very resistant to
false alarming. I have only been able to find the dual sensors at burglar.
    alarm companies.

I have a Radio Shack wired alarm system on the boat with the magnet sensors
and one of these dual jobs and it works well and does not false alarm.
