I have also attempted a fuel polishing system on Waiting's Over. The PO had
a couple of 500 Racors and a Walbro pump on board so it was a simple matter
of adding 101 fittings and 17 valves, :-) to reconfigure it to be a
polishing/ transfer system. The system is mounted on a 2x2 plywood board
attached to the side of the starboard tank. The PO had had the tanks cleaned
three years ago and was using Biobor(sp) religiously since. After starting
the system up and experiencing rapid filter clogging I opened the inspection
hatches and looked. UGH, the bottom of the tanks had 1/2 to 3/4 inch of
black gritty slime. The tracks of the pervious cleaning attempt were clearly
visible in the sludge in the bottom. I mopped out the tanks and started
pumping the fuel from side to side thru the filters. Fuel looks good now,
filter system runs continuously while underway and anytime I'm on the boat.
The filters and the pump can be isolated individually for service if
necessary, fuel transferred to or from each tank, the entire system can be
bypassed if necessary. The only leaks to date have been from defective cast
brass fittings (sand pits). Please note that some of the valves are not in
the picture as they are on the tank outlets or above the view of the picture.
The view shown is a work in progress with future refinements to include
relocating the on/off switch to the console(done), adding a timer(parts on
hand), relocating the vac gauge to the consoles. I would not recommend the
500 racors due to their small capacity but I already had them and don't
really have room for the GCF type although I could have paid for one with
what I spent on racor refills.
