    Richard,

I think we are in agreement on the sailing thing. That is my point.
This is of particular concern to sail passagemaking as the desire is to have
power systems that function efficiently with the engine(and/or generator)
turned off. It is not quite as critical to voyaging under power since we
usually have engines running which can usually keep up with the electrical
needs(that is how I was comparing it to the airplane scenario.....your point
is well taken that we do not live on airplanes). Now with that said, you are
correct in the fact that we are taking more and more with us and my above
comment may not be true. I was informed of a situation where a brand new
large boat(mfg.to remain nameless) that was drawing more power off of the
batteries than the alternators were providing at low RPMs.
I am certainly not a Slocum, but I do beleive in the KISS theory as I
don't ever see me voyaging with alot of the complex systems that are
discussed here....although the discussion is interesting. Technology should
make things simpler, not more complex. Because of technology, transport
category aircraft have become quite simple.....wonderfullly simple from the
pilot's perspective. But as you have pointed out, that is a different
    discussion all together.

    Trawler on,

    John
