I do understand this thread as it relates to
sailboats since their passagemaking occurs with the engine off(at least that
is what they tell you). While commercial aircraft use their battery(notice
the word is singular) in different ways, the systems and their uses are
similiar......and there is only one teenie tiny battery on the 40 million
dollar aircraft that I fly. And their respective electrical systems are
probably simpler than most of the boats owned on this list.

Wait up there....
There is a lot different between recreational aircraft and recreational
boats: chiefly, people don't live in airplanes.
And as for passagemaking under sail, I can assure you that battery charging
to replenish used power is a major issue at sea. Wind generators, water
gens, fuel driven gens, power take-offs, and on and on are often a
significant cost, complexity, and maintenance concern at sea during a
passage.
Is that tiny battery on the 40 million dollar plane you fly enough to make a
pot of tea while the engine is stopped at 30,000 feet?
See the Concorde Battery site
http://www.concordebattery.com/products/default.htm for a review of the many
kinds of (some) large aviation batteries.
I think the point is that more and more, more of us like to take our
creature comforts with us while cruising or passagemaking (but yes there are
some Captain Slocums among us).
