And when the turbines get going they really go. They can spin at
20000 RPM or more. Since they are hot from the exhaust and the
compressor is heated from compressing the air (think about how cooling
occurs when compressed gasses are depresuirsed like snow from a CO2
extinguisher). Would you knowingly cut off the lube oil to the
bearings of a very hot object spinning at 20kRPM? Idling your engine
to allow your turbo to slow down and cool is very important. I
believe that most turbos in automotive applications are now equipped
with pressurized oil reservoirs to lube the turbo after the engine is
stopped.
