    Sonny:

    There are several uses for pyrometers on diesels. One use of the infrared
    gun we have been discussing is to measure the temperature at each exhaust
    port and compare the readings. You would measure the exhaust at the point
    where the exhaust manifold joins the block and you can see the 6 individual
    connections before they go into one big pipe. (I assume that your Lehmans
    are like my Detroits). There should not be a difference. If there is a
    difference, it indicates an injector or mechanical problem with
    that cylinder. Other uses would be to measure the temperature at various
    points in the cooling system to establish what is the normal temperature
    and record it. Then if you have a overheating problem, remeasure the same
    points and try and draw some conclusions from the data. They are also
    useful in diagnosing a overheated connection or a circuit breaker that was
    hotter than normal.

    The other kind of pyrometer is installed permanently in the exhaust and
    reads out like any other gauge on your panel. It gives an indication of how
    hard the engine is working. It is especially useful on a twin engine setup
    because you look for differences.

    My background is as an automobile mechanic and I am still learning about
    diesels and the differences. I think you can live a long healthy life and
    enjoy boating to the fullest without either one of these things. The
    infrared gun is new technology and is a neat tool that would be fun to have
    and use.

    You have to remember that I do almost all my own work on the boat and the
    engines and I probably look at things differently when it comes to this
    stuff. I am also a little weird and love gadgets. If you normally have a
    mechanic come down and service the engine than you probably don't need one
    of these things because your mechanic will have one.
