We faced the same problem when we sold our home and moved aboard. After we
sold the house we got a notice that our "umbrella" policy had been canceled
since there was no underlying home insurance. Our original home owners
insurance was Farmers and we still have our autos with them. Our Farmers
agent went to work and persuaded the company to use our boat insurance as
the underlying insurance for a new "special umbrella" policy. The new
policy is somewhat more expensive than the old one but not nearly as much as
personal liability via our boat policy.
