Coming back from TFest on Sunday, we were a quarter mile
behind a Trojan 28 which slowed to a halt
suddenly. As we got nearer a gentleman was waving his arms
so we went over to his boat. He stated that his
engine had let go, and would I tow him in? Not feeling
comfortable towing someone, I volunteered to stay with
him until help arrived and offered use of our cell phone (he
did not have one). He apparently did not have towing
insurance.
After not getting any live people, only ans. machines, he
then asked us if we would take him into shore ( we were
about 3 miles
from our marina at the time). I asked him if he was sure he
wanted to leave his boat, and he replied yes.
Does this constitute abandonment? I don't think he had
called for assistance over the radio at this time, just
flagged us down and left messages for
a couple of relatives/friends with boats to come and get
him.
