    Garret,

You asked "We would like to spend several days in the San Juan Islands and at one of the marinas in the
Anacortes area. Can someone tell me if there are US
regulations re holding tanks and what they are?"

Yes, holding tanks are big time regulated in the US. No overboard raw waste in Puget Sound at all, the
Sound is considered an inland waterway and is within the 3 mile limit. Gray water is OK but you must
hold all waste or have an approved treatment system. There are pumpout stations at most marinas and
fuel docks, charge runs from nothing to $3 US. Some state marine parks also have pumpout stations.
Look for them at Anacortes, Friday Harbor and Roche Harbor or San Juan, and Rosario on Orcas.

We had a 40 gallon waste tank on our trawler and that was sufficient for a week plus of two people.
