In a previous life I was a young imortal spending a lot of time working off
of a very large flat roofed military vessel for extended periods of time.
The type of work that this vessel did required it to carry large amounts of
fuel oil, jet fuel, aviation gasoline and last but not least potable water -
theoretically in seperate tanks. Since the vessel was then about 20 years
old it won't come as a big surprise to learn that frequently there was cross
leakage.
I'm here to tell you that it doesn't take much jet fuel (kerosene) in the
water supply to make it and everything it's used in taste terrible!!
On morning while we were standing around drinking the tainted coffee and
b__ching about how bad it tasted, one of the guys said "Give me your lighter
(we all smoked back then at .25 cents a pack), this stuff is so strong, I'll
be it'll burn."
I handed him my lighter and sure enough - whuff!!! BURNING COFFEE!!! As we
all scrambled to dump our cups, he had a huge laugh. Turns out that while
we weren't looking, he had reached into a desk drawer and boosted the mix in
his cup with a good shot from the omnipresent can of Ronson's Lighter
Fluid. But it tasted so bad - we believed it.
Navy humor.
