Hi Tim,
No, I never had Michael complete the plans for SNORT -- see
http://xsw.com/snort
The sequence of events went something like this: After designing
Gulliver http://xsw.com/gulliver and getting plans to the "bid" stage
we collected some numbers, and I had to have a long "sit down" before
deciding that I just couldn't afford to go ahead with the project at
that time. (This was also before my discovery of the significant
savings possible by building in New Zealand.) Over dinner and a
bottle of something, Michael and I the came up with the SNORT
concept, an inexpensive, compact, trailerable aluminum boat that
would allow us to "get our feet wet" in the metal boat building arena
and learn some lessons before taking another run at a larger boat
like Gulliver.
TC (my wife, and a confirmed small boat fanatic, who had previously
sailed her 20' Flicka from San Francisco to New Zealand singlehanded
-- http://xsw.com/tikaroa) really loved the looks of SNORT but
suggested that maybe if it was made a bit larger, say 20 feet, and
given enough range to cross to Hawaii, we'd really have something she
was interested in. Since her excitement and enthusiasm was critical
to the overall success of any such venture, we quickly agreed, and
set to work. The result, as you know, was Boojum --
http://xsw.com/boojum.
Since Boojum began building about 2 years ago, our circumstances have
changed a lot, especially with the introduction of our new
crewmember, JJ. We have started talking about larger vessels again
(such as http://www.kastenmarine.com/greatheart48.htm) but TC is
still in love with the smallest boat that can do the job. We'll see
how Boojum works out for our family (hopefully she will be launching
in November or December of this year) before making any major
commitments to something bigger. And in any case, we'll be doing a
lot of cruising on Boojum during the next few years as it will take
that long to build something larger if we decide to go that way.
It would be fantastic if someone went ahead with the SNORT concept.
The SABB 10 hp diesel is still in production, the last of the old
SABB motors still being made. I'm sure that Michael would love the
opportunity to finish the design. SNORT would be a great little
boat, and I promise you that TC would be it's most ardent admirer!
Cheers,
Charles
ps -- we have sold the HAPPY FROG, but still own TIKAROA -- and TC
has no plans to sell him, either!
