On our boat, if you run the hot water tank dry, you will burn out the
heaters. I have a big notice affixed to the breaker panel to this effect.
But then we never run our tanks dry. The danger is shutting off the
fresh-water pump for a long duration (as in over the whole winter) and not
turning off the hot water tank.

The other day we ran the fresh water tanks dry. Since they hold 300
gallons, it's all too easy to forget to check levels. It was a simple
enough matter to refill them, but I wondered what would have happened had
we been on shore power at the time with the hot water tank circuit breaker
switched on. Is there some kind of protective circuitry in place for this
contingency, or would the heating elements have burned out?

    Cheers, Garrett
