Good question, sir!
Yes and No. They were then meant to be astronomical symbols for Venus
and Mars, respectively. The "New Age" stole them for Female and Male. :)
(See Bowditch [1977] Appendix C - the celestial symbols are/were often used
in sight plots, still always for sun, star and moon ....errrr, I think ;)
