There has been a real stink about these things--I have one variation I paid too
much for. They are Indian replicas--not usually accurate enough to use. When
they are sold legitiamately, small ones are about $100. and large ones can be
$300. From a distance they look nice and nautical--great for a designer wanting
nice deco for a seafood bar. But the workmanship is poor. If you are not sure,
take a magnifying glass and look at the engraving. If it's a string of dots, it's
a repro. Most say Stanley, some even have the admiralty arrow (mine does). Most
of the box sextants out there now are repros as well. InfoCenter is able to
cherry-pick and adapt the box sextants to get navigable results, but then John
Luykx is very, VERY experienced with sextant repair. He sells them reasonably
after that.
