I've been using Cap'n for years, and find it to be a complete program. Like
you, there are some things that could be better, but I've learned to live
with them just as we all have with other programs.
To secure my laptop: I place it on a piece of that non-skid stuff they sell
in all boat stores as shelf liner or place mats. It's kind of a rubberized
mesh. Then I secure it to a bulkhead with a piece of elastic cord around
the screen, low where it is hinged. It hasn't moved yet!
