"The proof of the pudding is in the eating" and I think the above
adequately demonstrates that it is possible to get meaningful results
from "a plastic sextant". I want to be clear on this point because
there have been commentators elsewhere who argue that sextants made
from plastic, a priori, cannot give good results.
It is my contention that a number of factors make getting these
results more difficult than with metal-framed sextants such as (but
hardly limited to) Astras.
On class of sextants that I haven't worked with are the 7/8 size
sextants. Aside from taking up less space in the cabin, what
advantage, if any do they offer? Also, it seems the shorter index arm
makes accuracy even more problematic.
