Thanks (oder danke vielmals!) to the several people who pointed out
the word can also refer to the brim or rim (for Strandkimm) or visible
horizon which, in the context Kimm is used, makes sense.
BTW, the book is "Astronavigation: ohne Formeln - praxisnah" by Bobby
Schenck, 1994, published by Delius Klasing Verlag, Bielefeld, Germany,
ISBN 3-7688-0259-0. I paid 32DM for my copy last month.
This appears to be (I'm still reading it) a very straight ahead
introduction celestial navigation with an emphasis on practical, daily
use instead of leaning on detailed theoretical discussion.
