I've come across a German word "Kimm" (also used as "die Strandkimm") in a
German text on celestial navigation and I'm unable to come up with a
good English translation for this word. The discussion involves
measuring the angle between two lines. The first line is the observer
to the top of a light house and the second line runs from the observer
to a point directly under the base of the light house (which, in the
text, conveniently is on an overhanging cliff) at the point where the
water meets the beach. "Mit dem Sextanten wird dazu ganz einfach der
Winkel "Spitze des Leuchtturms - Beobachter - Strandkrimm" gemessen."
I tried an on-line dictionary that suggested "bilge" for a
translation; that doesn't make much sense in this context.
