Upon reading this topic I did a quick internet search and found a book on the
subject. "Latitude Hooks and Azimuth Rings" by Dennis Fisher" 1994 at:
<A HREF="http://www.sevenseas-mn.com/books/navigation.htm">Navigation</A>

Part history of navigation and part hands-on project book. Includes complete
history and instruction for making 18 historic navigation tools including
astrolabe, cross staff, pelorus, traverse board and a vernier sextant.

Also I found some comments at:
 <A HREF="http://www.acs.ucalgary.ca/SS/HIST/tutor/eurvoya/ship.html">European
Voyages of Exploration: Shipbuilding</A> a small picture here of a traverse
board and some comments about early navigation.
