When day-sailing in familiar waters, I just keep a medium sized spiral-
bound notebook handy. I'll keep date/time entries starting in the front,
and general notes starting from the back.
Racing, or when sailing offshore or in unfamiliar waters I keep a small
notebook in my pocket to record data as it occurs. Down at the nav table
I keep a three-ring notebook with sections for various types of pages,
depending on the race or passage:
-- deck log for recording course, distance, wind, weather, sail changes,
LOPs, and fixes
-- sight reduction forms
-- last Local Notice to Mariners
-- race circular, instructions, course description, mark lists
-- boat's performance polar diagram and tables
-- always, plenty of blank sheets to write down whatever
