It's possible, but not likely. There are too many variables created by
atmospheric conditions, refraction, and estimating semi-diameter and
when that semi-diameter is on the horizon.
Now azimuth or amplitude of the Sun is easy to find so that you may
correct your compass, but positioning is near impossible.

Would it be possible to find position (or at least longitutde), without
a sextant by marking the time at sunset and going to the tables with 0
degrees as the altitude?
